Men are not the only ones being affected by hair loss. An equal number of women are affected too, as well as children. In fact, 3% of paediatrician’s patients are concerned with hair loss.

Surprisingly, hair loss in children is considered quite normal and most, if not all, can be easily diagnosed by child doctors. These are some of the most common causes of hair loss or bald spots in children:

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is actually the constant pulling, plucking and twisting of hair strands. Parents may notice bald spots on their children’s heads, especially on the side where the dominant hand is. Trichotillomania is caused by stress, a traumatic event, or anxiety. The child may have experienced some bullying, is having a hard time coping in school, or may be feeling the effects of his parents undergoing divorce. It is best to talk to your child when you feel that he is somehow experiencing psychological stress.

Ringworm

The child may have ringworm of the scalp, or tinea capitis. The child may have bald spots covered with flaky substance on his scalp. There may also be black patches where hair has fallen off. Paediatricians would normally recommend taking an oral antifungal to treat this disease. He may also suggest that the child use an antifungal shampoo such as ketoconazole or selenium sulphide. Like most fungi, tinea capitis is contagious, so make sure that no one else touches the infected child’s hair brush, hat or pillows.

Hypothyroidism

Another possible cause for children to lose hair at such an early age is a thyroid problem. Hypothyroidism is a condition wherein the thyroid is unable to produce sufficient amount of necessary hormones to promote metabolism. The effect is an excess in weight and hair loss. The paediatrician may ask for a blood test and in some cases, a scan of the child’s thyroid gland.

Hair loss is indeed an unpleasant experience for both children and parents. It is best to seek the advice of a medical professional before embarking on any self-treatment.

Hair loss can be such a tragedy that many people spend thousands of dollars each year hanging on to their dear tresses. Likewise, an almost equal number of people spend even more to regrow hair. But what exactly causes baldness? Genetics play a key factor in hair thinning and baldness, so does stress and disease. Pregnancy likewise contributes much to hair loss in women. Blood circulation to the scalp as well as a multi-vitamin deficiency is often the culprit.

Does wearing hats often make you bald too? According to researchers, wearing hats often do not cause baldness. This is good news for men who have to wear hats or helmets to work, especially military personnel. Dirty hats, though, are bad news. Researchers suggest cleaning hats and helmets often as dirt and bacteria can accumulate, promoting dandruff and scalp infections which in turn can cause hair loss.

Men wear hair gel and hair wax a lot, do they cause balding too? Not at all, researchers say. These chemicals, even if not used sparingly, do not cause balding at all. Just make sure to wash your hair before hitting the sack. A quick note, though: teasing hair and using curling irons can lead to baldness, so make sure to place all that yanking and pulling to a minimum.

Prolonged exposure under the sun damages the skin and hair, but do not contribute to hair loss. Tanning beds, too, are not guilty of making you lose your precious locks.

Some men believe that testosterone causes hair loss, and an overabundance of testosterone increases a guy’s libido. Some think that more sex equates to hair loss. Again, a myth, researchers say. Just because one man gets more sex doesn’t mean he will go bald sooner. Likewise, bald men do not have more testosterone than their hairier counterparts and does not necessarily mean they are better in bed.

Chemotherapy is just one of many ways to get rid of cancer cells in the body. It targets fast growing cancer cells while leaving other cells alone. Unfortunately cells involved in the production of hair are fast growing, so they will fall victims to chemotherapy. Not only do hair on the scalp is affected, but all types of hair as well such as eyebrows, eyelashes and even pubic hair will fall out once the body is subjected to chemotherapy.

Hair starts falling off several weeks after the first chemotherapy session. Look on the bright side. Now is the perfect opportunity to shop for wigs. Do not be afraid to try on different styles – if you have always wanted to look blonde but never had the chance to have your hair colored, do it now. Have you always wanted to wear your hair long? Curly? You can try buying different sets of wigs – you can have long, sexy tresses one day, a short cute bob the next, or go a la little orphan Annie with a bright red curly top.

If wigs are not your thing you can actually shop for hats or scarves. You can go for the Audrey Hepburn look with a large scarf tied around your head complete with big dark sunglasses. There are a number of creative ways to tie a scarf around your head and you can always play around with those.

Remember, when undergoing chemotherapy, it is best to focus on your health and recovery rather than spend your worries on how you look. Take this as an excuse to free yourself of worry and play around with wigs and other what not. If you do not want to experiment with newer looks, you can always go au naturelle and face the world hairless. If Demi Moore rocked it, so can you.

Seeing a few strands of hair stuck on your hairbrush should not be a cause for alarm, nor should you panic when you see hair clogging your drain. According to dermatologists, shedding 50 to 100 strands a day is considered normal. But at one point or another, you may notice that you are shedding more than usual. There are several factors which contribute to hair loss. Stress, age, pregnancy and disease are just some of the most common types of hair loss. Women also suffer from hair loss, just like men.

Before running to a hair loss doctor for hair implants or creams, you might want to try out these home remedies first.

Aloe Vera – Aloe vera has long been regarded by ancient Egyptians as a miracle plant used to help skin complexion and burns. Slice one piece of aloe vera and smear its juice on your scalp. Let it stay for about 5 minutes, then rinse. Do this twice a week to prevent hair loss.

Jojoba Oil – Jojoba Oil is an ingredient present in most shampoos and conditioners. No wonder since this miracle plants provides excellent moisture and prevents hair loss as well.

Licorice or Sage – Licorice actually prevents certain hormones in the body to transform into a catalyst which causes hair to fall off. Sage is well known for its hair loss properties, too. Add a bit of licorice or sage to your favourite shampoo or conditioner to prevent hair loss.

Kalaya Oil and Emu Oil – both of these are great for giving your hair a lustrous shine. These oils stimulate the scalp by increasing the circulation of blood to the area therefore making it a great environment for hair growth.

Eggs – eggs are rich sources of Vitamins A, E and D which help hair growth. Mix 4 egg yolks, almond oil and a dash of lemon in a bowl. After showering, massage this mixture onto hair and scalp. Leave the mixture on for 30 to 45 minutes. You may place a plastic wrap around your head to keep the moisture in.

We all know that tresses play a big role in a woman’s appearance. Seeing clumps of hair on your brush or quite a lot of strands starts clogging your drain when you shower, try not to panic. According to dermatologists specializing in hair loss, we normally lose about 50 to 100 strands a day. That sounds quite a lot, but if you are losing hair in clumps, it may be time to seek a doctor.

What causes hair loss in women, anyway? First on the list is genetics. Much like baldness in men, hair loss in women may be blamed to hereditary conditions. Is your mother’s hair thinning? If it does, you may have to cherish your crowning glory as early as now. Apply Minoxidil on your scalp in the morning and again before you hit the sack. Do not use this if you think you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.

Have you just recently given birth? Pregnancy is also known to cause an increased amount of shedding. After giving birth, there is an increase in the hair follicles’ life cycle (root growing, hair growth, shedding). In extreme cases, you may lose clumps of hair. The best thing to do is to let nature take its course. In time, your body will go back to its natural rhythm and so will your tresses.

Another factor which can trigger hair loss is stress. Aside from balding, stress can also do quite a lot of damage to a person’s scalp, including dandruff and loss of blood circulation which may result in dry, brittle hair. Try to relax a bit and step away from the stressful situation. Apply minoxidil, too, if necessary. It would also be a good idea to check your levels of iron. Anemia is a deficiency of red blood cells in the body which may be triggered when a person lacks sleep.

Studies have shown that hair loss is more prevalent today than ever. This condition is affecting both men and women. Although it usually affected the older generation before, premature balding is becoming common today. But what are the reasons for this?

Hair loss can be as a result of different reasons. However, here are some of the leading reasons for hair loss today.

Lifestyles are contributing to many of the health problems people are experiencing today. In addition, lifestyle can also contribute to hair loss. Today, people are preoccupied by work. This greatly affects how they live. This type of lifestyle is usually characterized by poor diet, little or no exercise and a lot of stress. This can adversely affect your health since the body has to strain to survive.

Bad lifestyles result in compromising the body’s normal functioning. This can cause premature balding in cases where the body cannot control its hormone balance such as the production of DHT. Consumption of products such as synthetic steroids for bodybuilding can also cause hair loss.

In a world that is becoming increasingly industrialized, pollution of the environment is on the rise. Apart from having bad effects on the environment, these pollutants are also causing health problems. They are finding their way into water and the food we eat. These pollutants might cause health problems which can result in premature hair loss.

Since hair loss today is largely caused by factors we can control, it is better to take preventive measures rather than wait until hair loss starts. You can do simple things such as changing to a healthy lifestyle to protect your hair from falling off.

If you are already experiencing some loss of hair, you can seek medical advise to find ways to restore your hair. There are many products on sale which can help you regain much of your lost hair.

Hair loss is a concern for many men and women today. This is more so because it is happening in their younger years. The main reason for concern is the fear that loss of hair will make someone unattractive. One way to know how to deal with hair loss is to know what causes it. Here are some of the causes that science has discovered.

A leading cause of hair loss especially in men is genetics. Everyone inherits some genes from their parents. In some families, the gene responsible for hair loss can be inherited. It was initially believed that this gene is inherited from the mother’s side of the family. However, studies indicate that you can also inherit the gene from your father. Therefore, if your family has some members who have lost their hair over time, it is likely that you might lose some of your hair as well.

Another cause of hair loss is the buildup of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is a byproduct of the breakdown of the male hormone testosterone in the body. This type of hair loss is more common in men and is a leading cause of premature hair loss. The effects of DHT are most observed in the temple area.

DHT causes the weakening and gradual death of hair follicles. These are the places where hair strands emerge from. Eventually, the hairs that grow from the affected follicles die out.

Another reason why hair loss occurs is bad health. Sickness can greatly affect your body’s, normal functioning such as the process of growing hair. This can be seen in diseases such as cancer and AIDS where the patient experiences some hair loss.

Finally, hair loss has also been found to be caused by chemicals and toxins found in the environment. A good example is chlorine found in water. When water treated with chlorine is used for bathing, this chemical might end up blocking the hair follicles causing the gradual loss of hair.

For most people, hair is one of their aspects of beauty. That is why hair loss is considered a bad thing. This is especially so if hair loss starts when one is still young. But is it really so bad. There are reasons why hair loss can be bad and they include the following.

The condition can result in the lowered self esteem on the person experiencing hair loss. Since hair loss was once thought to be reserved for people well over 45 years of age, what of those who experience it in their early twenties? Many of these people find it difficult to come to terms with the situation. Their self esteem drops since they think that people consider them no longer attractive.

A lowered self esteem in a young person usually results in a drop in their productivity. This can greatly affect their relationships with other people as well as work.

Hair loss can also be an indicator that your body isn’t healthy. There are some health conditions whose symptoms include loss of hair. Continued loss of hair can indicate advancement of these conditions and if not treated early, the patient can have complete loss of hair.

Depending on how the individual views it, hair loss can be a bad thing or just a normal stage in their life. However, you view it, the most important thing is how you deal with it.

A good way to deal with hair loss is let it be. This is especially so if the hair loss cannot be treated. But if there are chances that it can be stopped or reversed, then you might as well give it a shot. To do this, you will need to select the most effective method to stop the hair loss such as using hair loss products.

There are countless hair loss products on sale today. Among these, there are the good ones and the bad ones. Good hair loss products will help you to grow lost hair back. A word of caution though, there isn’t a product which actually grows the hair for you! So how do you go about finding the best hair loss product? Here are some things to look at.

Firstly, the product must be proven to work. Most of the products on sale base their claims on previous customers. Most are over the counter. However, the best should also be clinically proven to work. For example, a hair loss product should be put in the market after it has undergone testing and verification of its effectiveness.

The second thing is that the hair loss product should be safe to use. Over the years, many hair loss products have undergone changes simply because they initially contained ingredients with side effects. You need to find a product approved for use by consumers by the FDA or any relevant authority.

Thirdly, the hair loss product should focus on the cause of the hair loss. Most products claim that they can help you grow hair back. However, since hair loss can be as a result of different causes, the best product for you is that which tackles the main reason for your hair loss.

Finally, the best hair loss product should enable you maintain your hair growth even when you aren’t using it. Many products only work when you are using them or worse still, stop working over time. However, a good product should be able to help your hair follicles regenerate and work normally even without application of the product.

Finding the best hair product can be quite challenging since you have to consider many different factors. However, if you do find a good product, it will help you avoid the frustrations which come with trying out different bad products which don’t work.

There are many beliefs about hair loss which are being challenged today. One is the belief that hair loss cannot be stopped. The truth is, loss of hair can actually be stopped, slowed down or even reversed. This has come about mainly because of the different discoveries that surround what causes loss of hair. Here are some methods which are being used today to stop hair loss.

Hair loss products are becoming a popular way to stop hair loss. Most of these contain ingredients which act as DHT blockers. DHT blockers work by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By doing so, they prevent the accumulation of this hormone in the body thus preventing its effects which result in hair loss.

Hair loss products also contain ingredients which stimulate and nourish the hair follicles. By doing so, they help the hair follicles grow new hair strands where they were previously lost.

A good diet has also been proven to help in the slowing down and even stopping of hair loss. Diet plays an important role in the growing of hair. Hair growth undergoes different stages which start from the development of a new hair strand to its eventual death and shedding. For all these stages to be undergone successfully, the hair needs sufficient nourishment.

Hair loss can also be stopped through treatment of some diseases which cause it. If it is found that hair loss is a symptom of a disease, then treating it will give you the best chances of stopping the hair loss and restoring your hair.

Finally, you can also undergo surgical procedures which implant hair in your scalp. These are quite expensive but allow you to get your hair back. They are usually used in cases where hair loss is caused by genetic makeup which cannot be reversed.
